A Sardinian charm

  • • Giuliana creates her sculptures and furnishings in Selargius
  • • She is fascinated by human archetypes and natural geometry
  • • Sardinia's sealife and land creatures inspire her

Born in Assemini, renowned for its ancient pottery tradition, Giuliana Collu learned the techniques of this craft from her uncles, developing a passion for clay. She’s never stopped her artistic research, exploring themes and archetypes, experimenting with new shapes and colours, clays and glazes. Deeply rooted in her beloved Sardinia, Giuliana also keeps her eyes open to other cultures, such as the Japanese tradition of ceramic making. In her workshop in Selargius, she makes sculptures and furnishings, in a neverending investigation of archaic symbols and nature, charmed by sealife and the Earth's creatures. Professionally trained through courses and apprenticeships with great masters, she has participated in exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and has been awarded several prizes.

Brio marino

Brio marino, a ceramic bowl decorated with ceramic glaze and englobes, is part of Maria Giuliana Collu's Sea collection of ceramics. The theme and organic plasticity of this work opens up different interpretative paths: turquoise Mediterranean lacerations and cradles, rocks and storm surges that open the seabed to fossil traces stratified by time, as if to recall the foamy volute of waves and their circular motion.

Sea World lamp

The refined lamps of the Sea World collection are inspired by the regenerating power and the vibrant colours of the sea. The base of the lamps is crafted from ceramic decorated with glaze and engobes, and the lampshade from cream hued fabric. The sinuous contours and geometric lines define full shapes. The aquamarine blue, the bright white and the infinite iridescences blend to give life to a handcrafted representation of Sardinian beaches.

The Bride’s Pitcher

The Bride’s Pitcher, handcrafted from earthenware and ceramic glazes, forms a synthesis between ancient and modern. The feminine sinuosity, the purity of being and the mystery of life merge to represent an icon of a deeply rooted Sardinian tradition. The white of the material and the delicate ornaments that caress the contours recall the image of a bride looking into the mirror one last time.

Coccio Riccio

This handcrafted earthenware bowl is inspired by imagery of sea urchins. On the bottom of the sea, fragments of sea urchins settle. Drained of their vital pulp, they welcome tangles of algae and emerald iridescences. The surviving quills, once moving stilts, have become the peduncles of a precious cradle lying on a timeless backdrop.

Anemones

The design of this ceramic sculpture, handcrafted from earthenware and ceramic glazes, is inspired by imagery of anemones. The pearlescent white and the infinite iridescences of Sardinian beaches merge to give life to a creative representation, one strongly connected with nature.
