The walls of these porcelain vases are very thin and fragile, an apparent contradiction to their solid shape and appearance. The porcelain vases were each finished and decorated with various compositions of transparent and blue glaze.

The shape of emotions

Frans Ottink designs tableware, which he produces in his own workshop, often in small series. His collection includes a multitude of porcelain designs that originate from his entire career. The basis of his creations is geometric in nature, but often has a small detail or ornament. It satisfies the need to tell a story, to offer the spectator and user a look into his mind. “My educational background is the art academy ArtEZ in Arnhem, the Netherlands,” he says, “where I studied 3D Design and specialised in porcelain tableware design. My teacher was Dick Lion, a designer and porcelain maker who worked with Rosenthal and Arzberg porcelain factories. I was interested in the process of designing, but also in the process of making: understanding the material and its properties, and achieving the result I had in mind.”

Boat series
This set of bowls, with delicate handles, reflects the design and function of traditional dinnerware while, at the same time, recounting how they need to be handled, showing a social happening such as dining together, sharing, connecting.

Relief beaker
This set of six white porcelain cups have been shaped with a variation of reliefs on the side and bottom to keep them apart and yet together.

Tulip vase
Based on the design of traditional 17th century tulip vases, this vase is made of six cubic segments placed one atop the other, with a console to put the flowers, and a top part with a styled tulip in delft-blue glaze.

Bloem vase
The design for these vases was drawn from that of flowers. Frans Ottink drew his inspiration from organic floral forms and presents a large bouquet of flowers with thin branches. The arrangement is decorated with coloured porcelain on its interior inside, as well as a transparent glaze.
