A small basket such as this one can have multiple purposes, in this case it is intended for wedding rings. Using ring shaped wooden segments, crafted with a lathe, Francisco Roberto Pereira builds the basket by gluing all the plane tree wood pieces together using a single hand.

The curious wood crafter
- • Francisco has taught himself a wide array of wood crafting techniques
- • He became known in the Azores for his handmade wooden barrels
- • Recently, he has started to create fine wooden jewellery
Born in the Azorean Terceira Island, Francisco Roberto Pereira learnt carpentry at an early age with his uncle and continued to hone his skills alone. His eclectic pieces include barrels, religious sculptures, toys and traditional Azorean adornments. “I feel like a rebel, restless to try out new techniques.” In his workshop, he can use a scroll saw, lathing machine or focus on marquetry. He is one of the few artisans still manually making barrels and has also been prized for his traditional Azorean Espirito Santo festivity crowns. Creating one for his daughter inspired Francisco to develop a wooden filigree jewellery collection. Conscious that his craft is endangered, he organises workshops for young children hoping to pass on his endless curiosity for wood.

Jewellery Box
This wooden box, designed to hold jewellery, is made from a single piece of maple wood shaped on a lathe. The box is fitted with a lathe shaped piece of mahogany. The deep brown hue of the mahogany contrasts against the maple’s light tones.

Portuguese Beer Mug
These wooden mugs, handcrafted from pine and mahogany woods, are completely sealed with carnauba wax. The mugs, for beer or wine, are made using the same technique as those used to build wooden oak barrels in Porto to store the wine for ageing before it is bottled.

Mystic Spoons
These multi-purpose spoons, mainly used for tea and spices, are handcrafted from a variety of wood essences: boxwood, mahogany, beech and acacia. Francisco Roberto Pereira uses a variety of techniques to shape them such as carving the wood and micro jigsaw cutting.

Decorative Sieve Embroidery
The design of this decorative micro-cut piece is based on local sieve embroideries. This type of lace, from which the pattern of this decorative piece is originated from, is typical of Portuguese culture.
