Chinese heritage is a continual source of excitement and inspiration for Ilgiz. To create this gold ring, set with diamonds and sapphires and finished with enamel, he needed to study Chinese architecture, graphics and typical colours, Chinese techniques of carving on jade and working with enamel, as well as other nuances of the country's rich cultural heritage.

New horizons in jewellery

Ilgiz Fazulzyanov was just eight when his passion for art began. After graduating in design from an arts college, his first encounter with jewellery happened by pure chance when he joined a group of artisans in his hometown Zelenodolsk on a mission to revive Bulgar motifs in Volga Tatar jewellery. Learning from books and tireless practice, it was a very humble start. But dedication and talent did wonders. In 1994, after just two years in the business, Ilgiz won first prize at an international contest for young jewellers from Muslim countries with a setting for the Koran. Ilgiz first tried enamelling, now his signature medium, in late 1996, when a St. Petersburg friend came to visit. That fateful meeting was the moment Ilgiz found his perfect material – and the rest is history.

To create this pair of elegant earrings, set with diamonds and chrome diopside and finished with enamel, he had to study a range of Chinese jewellery techniques as well as Chinese architecture, graphics and typical colours. Ilgiz is happy that his perception of this amazing country and people is so accurately reflected in his products.

Poppies brooch-pendant
This gold brooch, set with diamonds and moonstones and finished with enamel, was an attempt to combine two styles, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, into one musical picture inspired by the voice of Lana Del Rey. Garlands of scarlet poppies are entwined around chords of music, symbolising the voice of the singer.

Black Swan brooch
The black swan is a symbol of the inevitability and unpredictability of situations that define our lives. The source of inspiration for the creation of this gold, diamond and enamel brooch was the work of essayist Nassim Taleb, which revealed a new understanding of what is happening to us.
