The beauty of Nero Portoro marble is enhanced by the gold tesserae encrusted in the cracks, much like the Japanese art of Kintsugi. The mosaic is complemented by scraps of leather and rusty sheets of steel mixed with brass.

The modern mosaic maker

Feeling a desire to create, Eloïse Baro began to learn the ancient art of mosaic making by herself. She then gained valuable knowledge at the prestigious Spilimbergo Mosaic School in Italy. Studying Roman, Byzantine and architectural mosaic techniques, she acquired expertise that allowed her to develop her own practice with a contemporary vision. Alongside her restoration work on heritage sites, Eloïse experiments by upcycling, using all kinds of discarded materials in her mosaics. One of her notable projects was the interior and exterior covering of a 1941 Ford in New York.

Kintsugi
Kintsugi (meaning 'gold joint') is a Japanese method of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer dusted with gold powder. This piece is made of slate, embellished with glass and gold tesserae in the spirit of Kintsugi.

This mosaic was created using a large variety of materials, such as rusty metals, gold tesserae, wood, beads, smalti and copper, arranged on a white plaster background. The frame comes from a rusty barrel. This piece depicts a shockwave after an impact.
