Take a seat

  • • Daniel is the keeper of an almost extinct craft
  • • He is inspired by the work of Thonet, Jacob & Josef Kohn and Fischel
  • • He always strives to do the best you know and realise there is no way to make it better

Daniel Lizarralde Aguirre did not complete his degree in engineering because he was drawn to the study of furniture conservation and restoration, which better suited his love of manual tasks. Over the years – thanks to a range of different experiences – he learned how to master chairmaking, chair seats and basket weaving. Daniel is an enthusiastic multitasker. In 2015, he also opened Zurjole, a workshop serving also as a craftsmanship academy. Chairmaking requires a proficiency in woodworking and the skill of weaving different natural fibres in several patterns like checkerboard, right-angle and under-over. His ingenuity allows him to devise customised patterns, interpreting clients’ wishes. The making process is 100 percent manual, he considers himself as the keeper of an almost extinct know-how, and has made the handing over of his knowledge a mission.

Elkano

Elkano is a gravity-defying sculptural chair designed by Ucka Ludovic Ilolo for éditions du coté. It gently rocks from left to right when pushed, before coming back to a state of immobility. It is made of black painted stainless steel with hidden counterweights and a single 300m Danish cord weave in a straight pattern.

Roure bench

This bench, part of Daniel’s Roure series, is designed by the product and interior designer Ana Tena. The bench is made in oak wood and the seat is woven with rattan. The long seat is woven with an under-over pattern while also leaving space between the frame and the woven part. A very straight line defines the design of the structure, with squared sections in all the pieces and a master joint used to hold the legs to the seat frame.

BI

BI is a combination of two objects, a breadbasket and a cheeseboard, created to be used together. Using an ancient design from the Basque culture, an aventador, as well as an under-over pattern, Daniel creates a new use for this classical weave. A piece of woven rattan modelled as the aventador holds a smaller piece of flat ceramic on top. In contrast, the second piece is a ceramic with the aventador’s form, and a rattan woven flat piece on top.

Lorenzo

Inspired by an antique mirror frame, this particular decorative panel is held together by the handcrafted rattan work. The decorative panel is composed of a squared wooden frame and a smaller rounded wooden frame. They are woven together with rattan to hold the rounded frame in place with a technique known as the Seven Step Method. The method is typically found in rattan work used with chairs and is also known as classic cane webbing.

Seat restoration of Wishbone Chair

The seat of this Wishbone Chair was rewoven in the original right-angle pattern, using Danish paper cord. The Wishbone Chair is the very first model the Danish furniture designer Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for the manufacturer of furniture Carl Hansen & Son, back in 1949. This chair was made in beech wood, painted in black and a seat of Danish cord was woven.
