The language of pearls

  • • Clémentine only works with noble materials
  • • She views jewels as a precious medium to conveys stories
  • • She honed her experience at a major luxury house

Behind Clémentine Despocq's poetic jewellery pieces lies her passionate vision of the craft: “Jewellery is an incredible thing, it is a marker of time and history, an object of transmission.” Fascinated by everything that jewellery represents, from a cultural, historical or sentimental point of view, Clémentine has made it her means of expression. Drawing on a dual training in traditional and contemporary jewellery techniques at AFEDAP, followed by industrial product design at HEAD – Geneva, she creates unique pieces, exploring the dialogue between metalwork and pearls. With a sense of challenge and humour, her work particularly questions the fragility of this latter material and its codes, thus breaking away from the traditional, bourgeois image of pearls.

Mirage

These asymmetrical earrings are mirror-worked. For each piece, the pearl is combined with a second round element worked and shaped with silver wire. The highest pearl is cut in half to sit perfectly on the ear. The silver and pearl form a balance that echoes the codes of classic jewellery.

Muance

These asymmetrical earrings feature a pearl sliced in half with two blackened silver pendants. The silver pieces are mouldings of snake skins that have been finished with a black patina, then each scale has been worked with gold leaf to reveal its precious details.

Carambolage

These silver earrings each feature an oval pearl. Each pearl has been micro-drilled to insert a silver stem, which in turn holds a garnet bead. The whole jewel is mobile, allowing a play of movement, sound and light when the jewel is worn.

Punkette

These earrings highlight a round cultured pearl. They were micro-drilled, and posts were flame-worked and inserted into the pearl. As a result, the classic pearl is adorned with a precious punk crest.

Atlas

These earrings are made from silver and pearl. The pearl was sliced in half to reveal its inner pattern. The pearl was treated with a blue dye bath. Each half is set off like a precious stone with a claw setting.
