Glass fusing exquisite tableware

  • • Christine started as a designer
  • • She taught herself the art of glass fusing
  • • She makes tableware for fine dining restaurants

Having studied visual communication and industrial design, Christine Mühlhan-Korner discovered glass fusing at an exhibition and was captivated by the technique and all the possibilities it offered. She decided to teach herself the art of glass fusing to combine her knowledge of design and her new-found love of glass. Thoughtful reading, practice and meeting glass artists brought her to open her own studio: she now specialises in making luxury one-of-a-kind glass tableware for prestigious restaurants and hotels as well as for private individuals. Experimentation and curiosity for the almost infinite possibilities of glass are central to her work that is meant to be not only visually perfect, but also the functional stepping stone for chefs to create their culinary art.

Coral glass bowls

These pieces by Christine Mühlhan-Korner are a snapshot of glass fusion. Glass crumbs (glass pieces) were used in different sizes. They behave in different ways during the firing in the kiln with different movements, melting together at the same time as they move away from each other, creating a look reminiscent of corals. One of the bowls shown was made with white crumbs, the other two with different black crumbs. They are decorative pieces.

Small black bowl with real gold

Christine Mühlhan-Korner made this small bowl almost entirely out of real gold. The narrow black rim shows the colour that lies under the real gold and shines through the fine lines that are created by the crackle effect of the gold. The underside of the small bowl is black and has a slightly roughened surface. The gold is permanently fused into the glass. It is a decorative piece for a companion table or for holding special things, such as jewellery.

Black Marble Set with gold bowl

This set consists of six round plates of different diameters and heights decorated with a pattern reminiscent of marble. The dominant colour is black but a very dark midnight blue is revealed with light. Each piece has been painted with a fine line of real gold running in different directions. The marble patterns are different on each piece, and the shapes used are characterised by an accentuated centre. The gold is permanently fused into the glass and is suitable for both the fine dining table or as a decorative bowl for valuables.

Mini medallion

These small bowls by Christine Mühlhan-Korner feature a 3.5cm medallion decorated with real gold in the centre and forms the base of the bowl. The gold is permanently fused into the glass. The colours translucent white, black, midnight blue, dark red and grey are painted on by hand. They can be used in many ways and are a good companion on the fine table.

Zebra bowl

This piece by Christine Mühlhan-Korner is made of strips of coloured glass of different widths and lengths, assembled like a jigsaw puzzle. The strips resemble the edges of rolled-out dough. The black-cream-white colour changes are condensed on one side and then loosen up on the other side in favour of the cream-white. The elliptical elegant deep shape allows a view of the no less exciting looking underside.
