Sculptures of Uruguayan folklore

  • • Carlos has had his workshop since 1983
  • • The first pieces he made were toys for children
  • • His specialties are design, carving and careful finishing

Carlos Clavelli considers himself a self-taught artist, although he assures that many anonymous masters have passed through his life. Both personal experience and curiosity have given him a lot, and since he was a child, he has always been interested in building. A trip through South America allowed him to learn about the popular arts of Latin America: their aesthetic, cultural and symbolic values. "I always liked to design, create and build. Working independently and developing my own ideas", says Carlos, who began making toys for his newborn daughter in 1981. "After a few successful experiences at shows and fairs, I thought it was possible to transform this craft into a profession". Today he masters abrasive carving and wood assemblies. His work is closely linked to the Uruguayan territory. "For example, in the series Paisajes Rurales, I represent the animals of our region and I integrate into the pieces the same materials that are produced in these regions (wool and leather)".

Marking cattle

This is a decorative object, a small scale wooden sculpture, carved and painted. The piece is inscribed in a rectangular prism in the form of a landscape panel. The object represents the Yerra, a tradition of rural work. As in a puzzle, each figure fits into the profile of the other, while remaining independent. The bodies of the labourers and animals are crowded together to create a dynamic and harmonious whole that expresses the strength and tension of the task.

Sheep

This piece is a decorative figure, carved and assembled with wool. The stylised sheep has the natural colour of the materials used. The wool is applied in the form of curls creating the volume of the wool body and its soft texture. This object is part of the Paisajes Rurales (Rural landscapes) series that celebrates the animals that characterise Uruguayan rural folklore.

Flock

This is a decorative sculptural object, carved and assembled. The unit's shape is inscribed in a flat cylinder. Many sheep's heads are visible in the cloud that gives its shape to the whole. The wool applied is the natural fleece of freshly sheared sheep in its natural colour. The piece is a symbol of rural landscapes in Uruguay.

Maternal sheep

This is a small-scale decorative sculptural object. The set consists of two separate pieces that formally approximate semicircular arches. The mother sheep wraps as in an embrace to her lamb. The piece is made of carved and assembled wood. The wool body is made of kneaded felt that wraps around the wood. The object has the natural colour of the materials used and is part of the Paisajes Rurales (Rural landscapes) series that celebrates the animals that characterise Uruguayan rural folklore.
