This tall hand-blown and cut glass vase was inspired by a study of regime change and memories of the Czech Republic during the interwar period. The paintings of Czech cubist painter Josef Čapek served as the challenge and inspiration to this piece. Like a painter who forms the reality with his brush until the very last moment, Anna Polanská does so with her ideas until the last piece of glass is placed and shaped.

Anna Polanská studied glass engraving and later on at the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague she studied sculpting as well as glass in architecture. She explores the material not only in her own artistic practice but also as a leader of the department of glass cutting and mould-melting at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Železný Brod. Her main interest is sculpted vases and other containers. Her initial creations featuring roughly carved chunks of glass have been somewhat tamed in later collections, where an interest in the natural world and its more ephemeral substances like the sky and vegetation is reflected. The unique surfaces serve not just as decoration, but as an expression of essential character.

Cliff II
This mould melted glass vase is one from a set of three vases inspired by imagery of oceans, waves, beaches as well as the power of light freely dancing atop of water. The wild surface of the glass contrasts with its overall geometric form, exemplifying the contrast between power, eternity and the untouchable flow of the ocean water. This structure was made with special hand operated glass cutting wheels that make each feature unique.

Philosopher
This blue hued hand-blown cut glass vase was inspired by the topic of loneliness. Through its imagery, it explores notions of people who seek to understand the meaning of their life as well as the mystery of living. This detailed technique of glass cutting allows for an original modelling, balanced between the cutting and engraving of glass.

Melancholia
Melancholia, a hand blown cut glass vase, explores notions of human existentialism. The vase is based on Anna Polanská’s personal memory of feeling the power of loneliness in the quiet of a dark cold night while aside a mountain top lake. It was not a feeling of loneliness but rather of communion with nature. The figurative composition was made in a round frame, a reminder of a signet with symbolic meaning.

P.O.L.N.Á.
This hand-blown and cut glass vase was inspired by the memory of a beautiful and quiet village, Polná, in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Anna Polanská’s father grew here, surrounded by nature, and she loves to go back at these places and feel the mystery of the beautiful views on the deep forests, blue lakes, fluffy clouds touching the mountains and moved by strong wind of this place.
