The hand-pinching ceramicist

  • • Alvin specialises in making unconventional wood fired teaware
  • • He built a wooden tea house in his workshop to test his teaware
  • • He developed the hand-pinching method himself

Alvin Ng has two professional facets: he is an award-winning visual communication designer on one hand, and a teaware artist on the other. Alvin discovered his passion for pottery later in life and decided to start making original, non-traditional teaware. His search for simplicity and fullness in reflecting nature’s generosity is consistent with his enriching yet simple life. Very active in preserving Singapore’s culture, Alvin co-founded a lifestyle company and co-wrote a book that depicts a fresco of his city-state-country with humour and perspective. Alvin has developed a unique pinching technique named the 'hand-pinched method' that allows him to form cups, teapots and small dishes by hand out of natural clay and achieve more organic forms.

Cherry Dates teapot set

Here are a hand-pinched teapot and cup in the form and texture of dried red dates. The shape is primitive and natural, with the beauty of wabi-sabi. The set is made of local brown clay, the cherry red colour coming from a copper red glaze, self-formulated ash glaze and reduction firing.

Ruddy Kingfisher tea set

This hand-pinched tea set embodies a ruddy kingfisher standing on a rock in the woods. Made with local white clay, the colours of dark rusty-orange colour and natural earthy brown are obtained through a copper red glaze, self-formulated ash glaze and reduction firing.

Mud teapot set

The mud teapot is made using Singapore brown clay and the hand-pinched technique. It is glazed with red iron oxide and a self-made ash glaze. The texture of the body is rough but delicate, and it complements the various hues of brown and the copper handle.

Rainfall chawan

Using Singapore mixed clay and hand pinched into shape, this Rainfall chawan is like an abstract work of art, every angle is atypical and expressive. The colours of brown and grey, derived from copper red and ash glazes and reduction firing, change hue when exposed to light.

o_pot chawan

Alvin Ng specialises in upcycling and re-imagining broken tableware. By grinding and mixing broken tableware into Singapore mixed clay, this o_pot chawan clearly shows the material of the old tableware through its elegant forms and nuanced colours.
