Sculptor staying true to his heart

  • • Woodwork is Wouter's first love
  • • He uses local, naturally-felled wood
  • • His studio is located in an old sawmill

“With time, you develop a certain maturity in your craft, reflecting more and more on the process of going from what you picture in your mind to physical reality.” Wouter van der Vlugt is a Dutch sculptor and furniture designer based in Luxembourg. His passion for wood started in childhood, when he would observe his father – an amateur woodworker – in the family’s large workshop. He went on to study economics, but eventually returned to his first love. “I think you can never listen to your heart enough,” he says. “Once this passion settles in you, you have to follow it.” For the last 20 years he has been developing his sculptures in Koerich, where he is a founding member of the Sixthfloor artist collective.

Biosphere series # 6

Through his Biosphere series, Wouter researches how nature build its structures and explores the seemingly random organisation of surfaces. The composition is intended to be somewhat chaotic. In the process however, Wouter realised that true chaos does not exist, that it is only on the surface of things, and that neither nature, nor the human mind, allows for true chaos.

Biosphere series # II

This piece is part of the Biosphere series and was designed with the idea of expanding the surfaces of the individual openings in order to create another sense of perspective. Through the series, Wouter researches how nature builds its structures and explores the seemingly random organisation of surfaces.

Channelling Light

This piece, carved from a single block of walnut wood, draws on a mathematical and geometrical study. The title “Channelling Light” came to Wouter somewhat spontaneously, after looking at the finished sculpture: it looks almost like a light-fragmentation machine, drawing in light and sending it out again.

Dreaming of Bigger Things

This sculpture, made from a single block of wood, has an almost charcoal-like or metallic feel to it. Chisel and chainsaw marks scar the surface, lending it a more natural look.

Linéaire 3

Contrary to Wouter’s main body of work, consisting of sculptures carved from single blocks of natural wood, his Linéaire series is made entirely of plywood, a man-made material. Wouter’s aim was to give the piece an organic feel, leaving it in an apparent natural state. The superposition of rather simple forms results in a work where order and chaos seem to coexist.
