When a passion leads to a profession

  • • Pekka values simplicity and style
  • • His work has a two year waiting list
  • • He is known for the puukko knife, a traditional Finnish knife

If you ask Pekka Tuominen about the origin of his passion for knives, he doesn’t have a simple answer. It's about tradition, but also the timelessness of the object, as well as its clean lines and simplicity, and the feel of polished steel. What started as a hobby when he was a child led to formal studies at the age of 18 and then a degree. Realising that becoming a master requires complete commitment, he started working as a full-time professional bladesmith in 2004, in his current workshop. Still, he feels there is always room for improvement, which for him means a constant process of trying, making mistakes and learning.

Spirales

The handles of these traditional puukko knives were fashioned from walrus ivory and African blackwood, file worked spiral pattern. The blades were handcrafted from two different steels, forge welded together, twisted and manipulated to create the pattern. The bolsters are pure silver.

Puukko knife & hunting knife

This set is composed of a traditional puuko knife and a hunting knife of Pekka’s own design. Following the Finnish tradition of handcrafting, the pukko knife was produced with a single curved cutting edge, a flat spine and a solid birch bark handle. The hunting knife has a drop point stainless steel blade and a birch bark handle.

Stiletto

This knife was inspired by the iconic Italian stiletto daggers, fashioned with a long slender blade and needle-like point. The guard, pommel and blade were forge-welded from Damascus steel while the handle was carved from walrus ivory.
