A road less travelled

  • • Teemu's artistic approach is unconventional
  • • His artworks contradict and surprise
  • • His principal material is fibreglass

Teemu Salonen considers himself a hermit, taking refuge in a small and serene village, a place where he can fully immerse himself in his work. After graduating as a carpenter, he continued his studies and became both an artisan and a designer. What drove him was a desire to master as many materials and techniques as possible. In turn, this has enabled him to think outside the box. Teemu learns the methods and then follows an unconventional path. He questions everything. In doing so, he ponders how he can create differently by reinterpreting the material and producing new and surprising forms. He calls his works “design jokes and straight-laced examples of craftsmanship”, they encapsulate the juxtaposition between tradition and innovation.

Butterflies & Hairy Balls

Butterflies & Hairy Balls was commissioned for a customer who wished for a table lamp to be made from a random collection of objects she sent me in a box. Teemu chose yarn, butterflies and empty spray paint cans to use. He also sourced some fibreglass from his own storage to make the pink base for this lamp. The butterflies were stiffened with clear cast polyester resin. The customer didn't know what she would receive and Teemu as the maker didn't know what material she would give him.

Chinese Restaurant 16

Part of the Chinese Restaurant collection, this table lamp was created with sculptor’s clay and finished in soft opaque colours. Each element was handcrafted and modelled into leaf-like segments that resemble the acanthus plant, following initial sketches. The series was initiated by a desire to create objects that were the antipode of traditional Scandinavian modern design.
