Weaving works of colour and texture

  • • Marianne's specialisation is weaving with horsehair
  • • She experiments with combinations of texture, colour and movement
  • • She sees her loom as a tool with which she can create new surfaces

The first time Marianne Kemp encountered weaving was at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. “It was during my final year, when I used weaving as the main subject of my project. That was when I started experimenting with dried plant fibres and horsehair.” After a master's at Chelsea College of Art and Design, she stayed in London where she started to sell her first horsehair wall pieces. Back in her native Holland, Marianne continued to innovate on the loom, developing many different techniques and applications. “I sometimes work with fashion and interior designers to incorporate different materials and techniques and create something completely new and unique. I like weaving surfaces that are different, and not necessarily recognised as conventional weaving.”

Mondriaan Symphony

Inspired by the linear designs of Piet Mondriaan, this wall hanging was exhibited during the Salone del Mobile in Milan. In subdued colours and design, the fabric is a free and tangible interpretation of a symphony, consisting of cadences, rhythms and accents.

Lasius japonicus

The loose, rough texture of this handwoven wall hanging was created by using tree fibre. The suspension system was inspired by a technique used for Japanese fishing nets.

Drifting Dialogues

Dialogues are recorded in this woven canvas, conversations go back and forth, we catch snippets of gossip. Tufts and loops go back and forth and are tied into the warp to be remembered. There is no beginning and no end.

Kimono

This wall hanging was made following the original dimensions of a Japanese kimono. The open-weave fabric and the rough texture of the horsehair contrast starkly with the silk that is used for traditional kimonos. Looking closely, the horsehair details seem almost to be drawn.

Rhythm

This wall hanging consists of a network of waxed cotton bands held together with horsehair forming the weft. By twisting the warp bands in regular sections and crossing the weft in a certain way, Marianne creates a rhythmic diamond pattern across the piece.
