In theme and function, they explore the act of emergence, opening to reveal pop-ups depicting wings, a rib cage and a plant, suggesting a thing trapped and awaiting release. The open book pictured is entitled I DO.

The engineer of bookbinding

Italian-born Manuel Mazzotti is a bookbinder, designer and trained engineer who creates limited edition books, prints, stationery and installations. Not one to do things by halves, Manuel went to Switzerland to learn from some of the best bookbinders in Europe at the Centro del Bel Libro. He studied the folded, origami-like structures of Hedi Kyle under school director Suzanne Schmollgruber. Then, in 2015, he received a QEST Scholarship to study with two masters, Kathy Abbott and Tracey Rowledge, who specialise in fine binding and gold tooling respectively. Today, his work can be found in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate, the British Library, the London College of Fashion and the National Poetry Library.

Custodians of the Scholar’s Way
This book cover is part of six special bindings commissioned by the author for the Chinese edition of Custodians of the Scholar’s Way published by Paragon Book, Beijing. In this book, Marcus Flacks continues his explorations into the great traditions of Chinese artisanal art. The cover design is inspired by the texture of the objects depicted inside the book, and the binding allows it to lay open flat.

Crags and Ravines Make a Marvellous View
This volume celebrates the exquisite beauty and cultural significance of Wu Bin’s monumental works. Manuel was responsible for designing and prototyping the clamshell box in which the publication is housed, as well as designing, prototyping and producing the 300 crown-bound books that hold the large format prints together. This special binding, invented by book artist Hedi Kyle, is created by folding A1 sheets of paper like a giant origami, allowing the prints to be detached from the binding.
