Amber glass with an aquamarine “overlay” has been blown into a metal structure, deforming the shape as the glass is blown through it. The metal structure was then removed and the cold glass cut. This site-specific installation is intended to be displayed as a hanging work, a play on light and sound, acting as an electro-acoustic exciter.

Transforming glass

Lorenzo Passi likes to define himself an artist, but the definition of researcher also applies to this young Milanese craftsman (he was born in 1985) who now lives and works in Venice. His work is characterised by constant research into the transformation of glass into something new that deviates from tradition both in shape and use. For a long time now, his experiments have led him to test himself with different materials, wood and metal above all, which he combines with glass in a challenging aesthetic and technical balance. “It’s not an easy task, especially given the different melting temperatures, which demand great attention and speed,” explains Lorenzo. “Nature is my primary source of inspiration; lately I have also been attracted to earth, which I like to blend into my works in order to achieve new results.”

A structure made out of iron rods contains a masterfully hand-blown glass vase. The green glass seems to be looking for an escape route, its fragile sinuous curves hampered by the rigid metal structure. After the glass had cooled, the opening of the vase was cut and ground to a smooth finish.

To create this object, red glass has been hand-blown into a metal structure. The glass seems to be looking for an escape route, pushing itself through the spaces of the enclosing metal. After the glass had cooled, the opening was cut and ground to a smooth finish.

Mincer
White glass with an aquamarine overlay has been masterfully blown into a pre-heated metal structure composed of cogs and wheels. The glass seems to be trying to escape, pushing itself through the spaces between the metal elements that inevitably retain it, giving the glass a melted-like form. After the glass had cooled, the opening was cut and ground to a smooth finish.
