When failure leads to excellence

  • • Bastian builds customised electric guitars
  • • He uses special surface treatments
  • • He finds playing the first notes on a new instrument to be magical

The guitar has always played an important role in the life of Bastian Kanbach. “I have been playing the guitar since I was 11, so I have always had a close connection to this instrument; it has enriched my life and given me the opportunity to travel the world and meet new people,” he says. However, studying music did not seem to be the right way for him to go. “I have had a weakness for crafts since my childhood, so it became obvious to pursue this passion professionally.” Bastian started training in guitar making in 2003 and later joined the workshop of Siggi Braun in Göppingen, where he created more than 100 customised guitars. Since 2010 he has been working in his own workshop with Oliver Reich, crafting exquisite electric guitars under the name Zeal Guitars.

This instrument was designed for a special customer, and was inspired by Frank Rohles's and Brian May’s self-made guitars. Bastian deviated from the original idea of a red stained top in favour of his 'Real Steel' finish – a coating made of steel powder, which is applied in a special painting process and then sanded and polished to a high gloss. He stained the back completely black and lacquered it to create a high gloss. The top is set off by a natural binding.

Black Paisley

The Black Paisley is covered with real brocade fabric which was glued on the front surface of the guitar prior to the finishing process. Several layers of lacquer were applied and then sanded back to create a completely flat and even surface. The back and sides were painted in solid black to cover the transition from the edge of the fabric to the wood. A final layer of lacquer was then applied, polished and buffed to a high gloss finish.

Hydra HB2

Hydra HB2 was commissioned by a regular customer. The guitar features a beautiful quilted maple top and khaya mahogany for the body. The floating ABM 5200 tremolo delivers a beautifully balanced tone with brilliant overtones and is also very stable thanks to the locking tuners. The guitar is a visual treat thanks to its charcoal burst finish and pale moon ebony fingerboard with black ebony bindings.

In close cooperation with the client, Bastian designed this guitar down to the smallest detail. The result is a straight rock’n’roll guitar with a unique metal finish. The surface of the mahogany body was coated with iron powder in a special painting process and then sanded smooth and slightly patinated with a vintage-like finish using an oxidation process. This contrasts with the hardware which is completely chrome-plated with a high gloss finish. The discreet aluminum inlay and flamed maple neck add further visual highlights.

KJ Custom

The basic idea for the design of this guitar was to develop a symbiosis of a PRS Doublecut and an ES335. After a long design process Bastian succeeded in harmoniously combining the two shapes in one. Only the finest woods were chosen: a beautiful curly maple top, which comes to life with the tigereye burst finish. A pale moon ebony fingerboard with black ebony bindings adorns the 5A flamed neck, which has been stained gold brown. To top it off, the sides and back were completely gold plated with 24k gold.
