An exercise in experimentation

  • • Jorge works with simple materials using a contemporary language
  • • He works with glass, ceramics, metal, wood and even cement
  • • Experimentation is key to his work

Born in Guimarães, Portuguese product designer Jorge Carreira first studied industrial design before taking a master’s degree in product design at ESAD in Caldas da Rainha. He is interested in processes and experimentation, creating his own designs and production, searching out materials and processes, and connecting with other designers and artisans. He loves to build an entire set of skills so he can become more autonomous and interactive, because his main goal is to have full control of what he does.

Planified Glass

This vessel, part of Jorge’s Planified Glass series, has characteristic metal imprints left on its surface from the metal mould. The simple construction and design of the mould makes it possible to assemble the form quickly and autonomously. When hot glass comes into contact with the metal sheet, small oxide stains are left on its surface, giving the piece its unique characteristics.

Prison Glass

This piece is the result of experimentation with glass where Jorge uses steel structures to limit the expansion of blown glass. In doing so, the metal structure becomes an essential component in the forming of the glass, helping to create unexpected objects.
