Bringing nature inside the home

  • • Johanna makes traditional tiled stoves with a contemporary feel
  • • In 2017 she was selected as one of Sweden’s best young designers
  • • Her tiles take inspiration from the structures and patterns of nature

Johanna Nestor is a young artisan who designs and makes contemporary ceramic tiled stoves using traditional techniques. She studied at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in ceramics and glass in 2016. “Tiled stoves have a long tradition in Sweden, although most are mass-produced in factories,” she says. “So the idea of making ceramic tiled stoves came quite naturally to me. I've always loved the rustic and genuine feeling of old houses and traditional objects. Since tiled stoves are made out of ceramics, one day I thought I could possibly make a stove myself... that’s how it all started.”

Golden Stove

These custom-made tiles, featuring beautifully detailed structural patterns, change in appearance depending on the light and position of the viewer. The tiles all start out as a sketch. Johanna then produces clay prototypes, before making the final tiles in plaster moulds, which saves time.

Mouth Stove

This custom-made sculpture is created from a series of tiles cast as mouths and has been left in its raw stoneware state. The tiles all start out as a sketch. Johanna then produces clay prototypes, before making the final tiles in plaster moulds, which saves time. Before being fired, the tiles are left out to dry – a process that can take up to two weeks.

The Oak

With the aim of bringing the outdoors inside, Johanna used oak trees to cast the moulds for the tiles for this ceramic stove. The stove starts as a sketch, followed by meticulous measurement-taking and the creation of a clay prototype. Johanna then starts to make the tiles, which she forms in plaster moulds to save time. When the tiles are ready, on their underside she starts to model the frame that will stabilise the structure.

Wooden Ceramic Stove, tiles

With the aim of bringing the outdoors inside, Johanna has glazed these tiles to look like the wood of Nordic trees. The tiles start out as a sketch and then clay prototypes are created. Next, Johanna makes the tiles in plaster moulds, to save time. The tiles can take up to two weeks to dry.
