Sun no. 13 is a handmade kilim to be hung on a wall. The kilim took over 20 hours to weave and is made from raw wool coloured with natural dyes: avocado, madder root and chokeberry. These dyes often tend to fade or change their shade as time goes by, meaning the kilim will age with its owner throughout their life.

A modern perspective on weaving
- • Wiktoria and Jadwiga take inspiration from their everyday life
- • All their materials are sustainable or recycled
- • It may take around two weeks to create a single kilim or rug
Weaving is a time consuming craft. Preparing a loom might take up to four days before the weaving process can even begin. Given this slow pace of work, it's no wonder Wiktoria and Jadwiga named their studio ‘tartaruga’, which means turtle in Italian. The pair met in the faculty of material technologies and textile design at Lodz University of Technology. They were still students when Art_Inkubator, an initiative that supports young people in starting their creative endeavours, announced a competition for new applicants. "It was an impulse," they say. "We knew we would have to wait two more years for the next contest and this was the moment to try." Two months after winning, they opened their studio, offering a contemporary approach to the traditional craft of weaving kilims and rugs.

These dyes often tend to fade or change their shade as time goes by, meaning the kilim will age with its owner throughout their life.

Kilims from Poland collection: Shapes on Stripes, Random Shapes and Moonlight
Kilims from Poland is a collection of hand woven kilims inspired by traditional eastern and hutsul textiles. The wool used in their production was collected from sheep from the mountainous Polish village of Koniaków and then hand dyed in Tartaruga's studio. Every design is produced in limited numbers. All the kilims are signed, and bear a serial number and the names of the designer and maker.

Fav Stuff collection: Jugs and Red
Fav Stuff is a collection of contemporary, handcrafted cotton rugs, inspired by Jadwiga and Wiktoria's favourite things. Over 90 percent of the materials used in the collection come from recycled textiles. All the rugs are reversible, finished with a linen selvage and can be washed in a washing machine. They are suitable for allergy sufferers and vegans.

Vase
Vase is inspired by one of the vases in Tartaruga Studio’s workshop depicting two leaves of a sansevieria plant. The rug was entirely handmade with over 90 percent of the materials coming from recycled textiles. The rug can be used as a floor covering or a wall hanging. Thanks to the traditional weaving techniques used to create the rug, the amount of wasted material is tiny.
