Hervé has used his extensive knowledge of 18th-century stone-working techniques to create this elegant javelin-shaped pen. Crafted from a careful balance of agate and sardonyx (or sard), the pen has a cap as long as the barrel, with the gold nib placed in the centre, much like the grip in a real javelin.

The case of this gold nib pen was carved from a piece of obsidian, a volcanic rock that is normally black but, as here, can present shades of brown. Hervé uses his profound knowledge of glyptic art, gained over a lifetime of working its various techniques, to shape the barrel and cap of this elegantly balanced pen.

Hervé strikes a perfect balance between dark Mexican obsidian, agate and coral in the design of this gold nib pen. When the pen is closed, a flat circle of coral placed on the cap props the pen up, preventing it from rolling around.

With a lifetime of experience working precious and semi-precious stones, Hervé skilfully combines circular segments of basanite and tiger’s eye with the utmost precision, creating a pen evocative of the shape and colours of a bee. Eight examples of the pen were crafted, finished with details in gold and coral, and fitted with a gold nib.
