“I have had the good fortune to find myself in a place where mosaic is practiced at its highest level, and I have had the opportunity to express myself fully in this field, creating many mosaics all around the world.” Giulio Candussio is a prolific mosaic artist whose long career has been marked by remarkable collaborations with world-renowned architects and designers. He was educated at the Scuola dei Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, one of the most important international institutions devoted to the training of professionals specialising in mosaic art, where he also taught for many years before being appointed artistic director. He dedicates his time to his first love of mosaic, as well as to sculpture, painting and drawing. His signature style emerges vividly and powerfully through all expressive mediums.

Vertical Chromatic Movement

Over his career, Giulio has created countless mosaic works, striving to perfect traditional techniques while using and inventing new materials along the way. This mosaic uses innovative techniques to explore variations in light and colour. The tesserae, made from experimental enamels, were laid directly in cement mortar.

Rotations in Space

This two-sided mosaic is not anchored to a floor or wall, as it would be traditionally, but rather is suspended in space. From a young age, Giulio understood mosaics as art, an extension of painting. His work is characterised by a need for constant material and technical experimentation, breaking away from traditional mosaics to indulge in a constant exploration of colour, light and form.

Plastic image of: EUROPE

The tesserae covering the surface of this 10-metre-high column are a mix of natural materials and experimental and ceramic enamels. Ochre tesserae adorn the bottom part of the column, while the upper part is decorated with colourful geometric forms and the names of European countries. The work is characteristic of Giulio’s ongoing experimentation with and exploration of new materials.
