Fflur dyed Italian leather and moulded it into this stimulating, organic form, then fused it with hand-carved Welsh holly dyed to blend with the leather. Inspired by the mesmerizing textures found in in the wild, Fflur considers her works to be alive, each one scientifically documenting the patterns and shapes that embody our relationship with the natural world.

The science of leather

Fflur Cadwaladr Owen grew up in rural Wales and at the age of 10 was already carving wood with her carpenter father. “Since a very early age, I’ve enjoyed making. It was very natural to me. Discovering nature and recreating it from materials was something I enjoyed doing as a child,” she explains. She started working with leather during her studies in fashion design. “I sourced very thick, natural, vegetable tanned leather and started experimenting with it.” She learned as much as she could by herself, and after two years she applied to the Royal College of Art. Thanks to a scholarship she set up her studio in 2015.

For these sculptural figures, Fflur combined hand-carved Welsh holly wood with disks of Italian vegetable leather. The organic shapes were inspired by natural textures that Fflur has observed on the sea shore. She imagines her works to be alive, each one scientifically documenting the patterns and shapes that embody our relationship with the natural world.

These four vessels were created from hand-sculpted and dyed clay forms embellished with Italian tanned vegetable leather disks in ivory. Fflur draws her inspiration from observation of shapes in the natural world around her, especially the sea shore. She likes to think that her pieces are a scientific documentation of patterns and forms that embody our relationship with the natural world.
