This micro-mosaic of Planet Earth was made using the Roman cutting technique. Based on an original photo taken from the Geosat satellite, the planet is mounted on a single slab of milky-black marble (Brazilian granite). The seas and oceans were created using lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone prized since antiquity for its deep blue colour.

This micro-mosaic of the Madonna and Child was made using the Roman cutting technique. The tesserae range in size from a square millimetre to a square centimetre, enabling an extremely detailed rendering of colours and shades.

This micro-mosaic is a copy of a mosaic floor from the forum of Ostia Antica in Rome. The black and white mosaic depicting a centaur shooting an arrow from a stretched bow was made using the Roman cutting technique.

Based on an original work from Pompeii created in the 1st century AD, this micro-mosaic was made using the Roman cutting technique. The theme of the mosaic, Memento Mori (“remember that you must die”), goes back to ancient Greece and is reflection on the briefness of life, exploring how the arrival of death pushes aside notions of social class.

This micro-mosaic of the Gorgoneion is an exact copy of a 2nd century AD mosaic preserved in the National Roman Museum in Rome’s Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. Fabio worked with the museum in the restoration of the original piece in 2010. The micro-mosaic was made using the Roman cutting technique.
