The storyteller of screen-printing

  • • Daniel makes bespoke wallpapers, textiles and interior surfaces
  • • He enjoys teaching screen-printing at universities and in his studio
  • • His work features in 2015 book Makers of East London

As a child, Daniel Heath was “obsessive” about drawing, and took inspiration for his sketches from BBC wildlife presenter David Attenborough’s nature programmes. He discovered textiles during a foundation year at art school, and loved the process of applying his illustrations to something that “wasn’t just an art piece for art’s sake”. However, unable to afford to print on silks or fine fabrics as a student, he started to print wallpapers instead. He now works out of his studio in London, where he still makes bespoke wallpapers but has also diversified into textiles and hard surfaces, using a mix of traditional and digital printing techniques to transfer his artistic vision onto cushions, tables, mirrors and even reclaimed slate tiles.

Eastern Peacocks wallpaper

Based on a love of the native Indian peacock, this wallpaper design narrates the history of these magnificent birds, strutting around decorative colonial palaces and gardens by day, and taking flight to settle in the trees to roost by night. The intricate structure of the bird’s feathers creates that famous vibrant iridescence which Daniel captures through his delicate and refined hand-drawing skills.

Taxidermy Birds wallpaper

Daniel is fascinated by the weird and wonderful. His “Taxidermy Birds” wallpaper features a design that compels a second look. On closer inspection, the seemingly beautiful birds are in fact pinned, stuffed and preserved in a static macabre state.

Bespoke bathroom

A large family home in West Hampstead, London, needed a new occasional-use bathroom. Working with the client, Daniel selected a whitewashed wooden ash panel and his complementary Aviary Etched Mirror Surface to create a soft and elegant interior scheme. Both materials are adorned with a continuous non-repeating pattern, which runs across all four walls, featuring bespoke hand-drawn birds and intricate climbing vines.

Espalier etched slate tile

Reclaimed Welsh roof slates are repurposed for interior and exterior wall adornment. Presented in shingled formations, each slate tile is etched with Daniel’s “Espalier” series, a design inspired by a system of growing fruit trees horizontally. Jays swoop and perch in between gnarled apple branches ripe with fruit.
