Part of the Hand Fan series, this work was inspired by a visit to Joan Mirό’s workshop in Mallorca. Its flat part was handcrafted from sheepskin, oil painted and finished with wax. The handle was fashioned from a tree branch.

Creating as a team

Christos Christidis, who initially studied law, and Michalis Maidatsis, who was an architect, started working together in 1987 when they created their first functional objects (lamps, boxes, screens) using cardboard as their main material, for various shops in Thessaloniki and Athens. The two artists believe that our surroundings are what gradually end up defining us. In this sense, the aesthetic improvement of everyday life is a source of inspiration for them. Their interest in construction has led them to interact with various artists, mainly painters, enriching their knowledge at multiple levels. “Working as a team means having a mirror in front of you, both for the good and the bad,” they say.

Idolion
Idolion is part of the Hand Fan series and was made as a tribute to the abstract spirit of Cycladic art. It features a handle made of sculpted and painted driftwood and a body handcrafted from paper and silver, finished with wax.

Tucan
Part of the Hand Fan series, Tucan is reminiscent of objects found on tropical islands. Its flat part was handcrafted from paper, acrylic paint and wax. The handle was fashioned from driftwood, painted and finished with wax.

Black Lotus
The lotus flower shape was used to create this work, symbolising purity and regeneration. Part of the Hand Fans series, it was handcrafted from ostrich skin, painted and finished with wax. The handle was fashioned from driftwood, painted and finished with wax.

Marrakesh
This work was created after a trip to Marrakesh where Christos and Michalis experienced five windless days and nights at 50˚C. The main part of the piece was created with paper while the handle was fashioned from recycled processed wood, acrylic paint and raw chalk, and finished with wax.
