Unexpected transformations

  • • Silvia's work is powered by natural structures and the rhythm of life
  • • She creates tactile objects using densely layered clay
  • • She is recognised internationally for her unique talent

Silvia Chaneva graduated in ceramics from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia, and is a member of the Bulgarian Union of Artists. A bright star of Bulgaria's contemporary visual arts scene, her tube-like incised vases, strange cups, abstract sculptures and rubber and clay pieces of jewellery are ubiquitous in Sofia’s high end galleries and art shops. She mostly works with coloured porcelain, layering up to four different colours in a single piece. Her creations fascinate with their combination of classic and conceptual looks, organic and systematic shapes.

Shell

This monochrome porcelain form is part of Silvia Chaneva’s Shell Object series. Throughout her work, she draws inspiration from nature, from structures and forms that she has observed, especially those that have evolved over thousands of years. Shell was cast in a mould from several layers of porcelain. Silvia then works each sculpture by hand, meaning no two are ever alike.

Shell – yellow bowl

Silvia Chaneva drew inspiration for this coloured porcelain bowl-shaped sculpture from forms observed in nature, especially shells and other forms that have evolved over thousands of years. She finds it challenging to interpret them, imbuing them with personal emotions and perspectives. Following the first firing, the bowl was decorated with various glazes and its surface was worked on by hand.

Vases

The inspiration behind this pair of coloured porcelain vases came from Silvia's keen observation of forms found in nature, especially those aspects that have evolved over thousands of years. The vases were individually cast in moulds from several layers of porcelain and then worked on by hand.

White organic bowls

These porcelain bowls were created in moulds from various layers of porcelain and subsequently worked on by hand, imbuing each sculptural form with unique traits. Silvia added black colour to the white porcelain, accentuating the forms of the bowls. She drew her inspiration for their unique design from her observation of natural forms, such as shells.

Orange organic bowls

These coloured porcelain bowls were created in moulds and subsequently worked on individually, imbuing each with unique traits. The black colour of each bowl’s interior contrasts sharply with its bold yellow-orange exterior. Silvia Chaneva drew inspiration for these forms from her observation of natural forms, such as shells.
