Sea Anemones is part of a wider group of marine plants that were presented in a 2014 exhibition at the Benaki Museum shop called Metamorphosis 2. For this exhibit, Rena played with forms and volumes, exploring the possible sculptural transformations of upcycled plastic bags. As a result, she created a collection of enchanted sea creatures.

When plastic bags become art
- • The Greek countryside is one of Rena's main inspirations

Rena Athanasiadou, an architect by profession, started making jewellery with semi-precious stones, wire and metal inspired by a visit she made to a jewellery exhibition, but it wasn’t long before she started using other materials as well. Mostly self-taught, she kept experimenting in order to fully explore the limits of every material she used. “This search led me to try the plastic bag as a material and discover its potential,” she says. Rena thinks that the creation of art using recycled bags and other used materials is just starting. “Partly due to environmental reasons, artists nowadays feel the need to express themselves with simple materials,” she says.

Dragon
In 2014, Rena started creating a collection of large scale objects reflecting mythical creatures. She crafted Dragon using 58 different plastic bags, recycled from her daily activities. The sculpture is stained with blood and comprises different creatures' body parts. The dragon's eyes are red, just like his threatening tail, contrasting with his black bones.

Pale blue & purple bracelet
Rena crafted this bracelet from a single plastic bag from the Tate Gallery in London. Playing with movement and colour, she created an abstract circular form, which is both a sculpture and an item of jewellery.

White Flower
White flower is part of a series of different semi-transparent flowers of various sizes. A single black line emphasises the general whiteness of the object, giving it a milky appearance.
