Connected to clay

  • • Drawing is an essential part of Maria's art
  • • She enjoys experimenting with materials
  • • She tries to combine two and three dimensions

María Oriza had intended to study art at university, but bureaucracy prevented her from doing so in Madrid, where she wished to remain. So instead, she eventually chose ceramics. At first, she knew nothing about it, but she was quickly captivated by the potter's wheel and the process of using oxides to make colours. “I felt immediately that I was profoundly connected to clay and stoneware,” she says. She was also interested in drawing and sculpture, and tried to merge both techniques. She now makes wall pieces and installations, creating volume by cutting, joining, bending and folding planes, while searching for symmetry and simplicity.

Anatomía de la lágrima transparente al azul de tu mirada

In this stoneware sculpture, María analyses the simple yet suggestive shape of a teardrop by combining a number of elements by means of triangulations. The resulting volume resembles a plant-like organism on the exterior, while the interior is translucent and abstract.

Erinia

Four flat sheets of clay are bent and assembled to create a volume that seems to flow and change in shape depending on the viewer’s perspective. The repetitive network of curving lines meeting at four points form a dazzling optical illusion, leading the eye from the centre to the exterior with a pulsating energy.

Lúnula

Two curved sheets of clay are joined to form an elegant oval etched with lines that create an ever-changing play of light and shadow. The crescent-shaped interior of this stoneware sculpture alters depending on the viewer’s perspective.

Equilibrio circular II

By folding and curving the sheet of clay into a shell-like structure, María has created volume and an interior space, with a balanced form that evokes notions of a constant search for stability.

Muro Mar

“Sea Wall” evokes the movement of ocean waves, the continuous displacement and propagation of matter. The geometry of the design and the undulating stoneware combine to create a rhythmic and continuous surface.
