Turning kitsch into art form

  • • Andrea was trained by master ceramicists Bertozzi & Casoni
  • • In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Premio Faenza
  • • It takes him up to 15 days to create an elephant

Andrea Salvatori is the perfect example of how dedication and study can enable a pupil to equal his master. Andrea learned the secrets of ceramics from the creative duo Giampaolo Bertozzi and Stefano Dal Monte Casoni. Their Bertozzi & Casoni atelier is one of the feathers in the cap of Italian ceramics. “Funnily enough, in the beginning my idea was to study sculpture. I enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, but in my spare time I started working with Bertozzi & Casoni to earn some pocket money. I ended up falling in love with ceramics.” His passion was soon rewarded by success: in 2009, Andrea received one of the most important prizes in the world for ceramics, the Premio Faenza.

Cubist Research

At the centre of this ceramic sculpture stand two classical porcelain figurines. Andrea has assembled numerous pieces of small geometric ceramic solids and placed them in such a way that they “attack” and overwhelm the two figurines.

Tutti Tappi Delicious#4

The lid of this glass vase is made up of dozens of ceramic spheres that both rise above and stretch into the vase. The different colour spheres of light nuances are assembled as scraps of colours into a single ceramic piece. The lid can be removed from the vase and placed on the table as a sculpture.

Non è una sedia

Andrea has taken the form of a classical white chair to create this ceramic sculpture. He then overshadows the classical form with different coloured spheres of varying sizes and colours. This collage of colour clippings progressively overwhelm the form and override its function.

Composizione 40100#12

This vase was created in collaboration with the 3D Wasp Project firm. With their help, Andrea designed a classically shaped vase with a 3D printer. While the printer was extruding ceramic material, he gradually introduced pink coloured clay spheres. The vase that originally supported itself collapsed and formed a new design.
