The craftsmanship in interior design

Campbell-Rey is an award-winning design studio founded by Duncan Campbell and Charlotte Rey. Working between residential and commercial interior design, furniture and product design, their world is a celebration of conviviality, colour and exceptional craftsmanship. Born in Edinburgh, Duncan read Law at King’s College London and Charlotte, originally from southern Sweden, studied Fashion History and Theory at Central Saint Martins. They began their career together at Acne Paper in 2007. They launched Campbell-Rey in 2014 as a creative consultancy specialising in storytelling for luxury brands including Baccarat, Bentley, Bulgari, Penfolds and Veuve Clicquot. Their design commissions for commercial clients include the London Edition hotel, 1stdibs, Clos19, Kartell, Christie’s, Away, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation in addition to a number of private clients. In 2022, Campbell-Rey was included in House & Garden's list of 100 top interior designers and architects working today, Architectural Digest Germany’s AD100 list of the most influential designers and architects, as well Country & Townhouse magazine's Top 50 Interior Designers.

What does craftsmanship signify for you?

Craftsmanship is a bit like the ocean in a drop of water – a whole world can be contained in a single object.

How does it feature in your work and life?

It is almost a way of living for us, as it features in everything we do and touches upon all aspects of our personal and professional lives. We aspire to create interiors like gesamtkunstwerks. We are constantly looking for exciting artisanal techniques and meeting makers who inform our work. Aside from striving to create spaces and objects to the highest artisanal standards, we continually travel and seek out beautiful examples of craftsmanship as an intrinsic part of work and life.

Do you work with craftspeople and how?

Yes, we work with master artisans consistently across our interiors, furniture and object designs, both for large and small projects. Our relationship with artisans is what informs and shapes our design work, and what we are the most passionate about in the production process. We often collaborate with craftsmanship brands on capsule collections which we find endlessly inspiring as we get to deepen our relationship with a master or a technique and put our own spin on it.

How would you define excellence?

The magic meeting of superb craftsmanship, authenticity, beauty and practicality.
