A select group of 150 guests will be invited to the opening event. Following an introduction by Adriano Berengo, artist Koen Vanmechelen will discuss the cross disciplinary nature of his work, including the integration of different craftsmanship – such as the glass masters at the Berengo Studio. The presentation will be followed by a round table debate between Adriano Berengo, artist Koen Vanmechelen and international curator Jill Silverman van Coenengrachts on the role of glass, natural materials, living installations and craftmanship in contemporary art.
Venice glass tradition meets contemporary art In 1989, Adriano Berengo, inspired by the collaboration of Peggy Guggenheim and Egidio Costantini with great artists like Picasso and Chagall, opened the doors of his furnace in Murano and founded Berengo Studio, to “make artists think in glass”. Here, the celebrated Muranese glassmaking tradition marry the projects of contemporary artists, who have the chance to explore new expressive fields. The most skilled craftsmen have pushed themselves to their limits, developing innovative techniques, to realise the artist’s original visions, in a never-ending creative dialogue. As a result of this partnership, the Venetian glass culture has filled contemporary art with a new energy, while confronting new challenges. In more than 30 years, over 300 international artists have worked here: among them Ai Wei Wei, Tracey Emin, Tony Cragg, Thomas Schütte, Laure Prouvost, Mario Schifano and Vik Muniz.
