Retracing the route of glass from ancient times to the contemporary outcomes
Visiting the Venetian Museo del Vetro means exploring the history of this surprising material, whose birth is lost in the mists of time. The collection is chronologically exhibited: the tour begins on the ground floor with the archaeological section, while on the first floor the museum hosts the largest assortment of Murano glass in the world, displayed in sections: From the 14th to the 17th century: the Golden Age; the 18th century: fashion and creativity; Venetian beads; from mosaic glass to “millefiori”: murine; 1850–95: the revival; 1900–70: glass and design; and contemporary glass: the donations.

Glass makingAn aristocratic palace for the history of glassLocated on the island of Murano, renowned all over the world for the art of glass, the Venetian Museo del Vetro occupies the rooms of the noble Palazzo Giustinian, the former seat of the Bishops of Torcello. The historical collections are displayed in chronological order: in addition to the archaeological section, which includes outstanding Roman objects dating back to the first, second and third centuries AD, the museum hosts the largest collection of Murano glass, with prominent artworks produced between the 15th and the 20th century, including world-famous masterpieces. In the enchanting garden, contemporary pieces of glasswork are often shown. Thanks to a re-styling of the museum in 2015 it has almost doubled its exhibition spaces, reorganised with a new layout and new itineraries. Also the partial recovery of the Conterie (the former factory where conterie, glass beads, were produced) has provided the museum with a seven-metre high open space, dedicated to temporary shows and events.
