Museo Correr

A fascinating insight into the art and history of VeniceOne of the most important Venetian museums, the Correr takes its name from Teodoro Correr (1750–1830), an aristocratic Venetian art collector who left his artworks, his palazzo at San Zan Degolà and funds to the city of Venice upon his death. In 1922, the museum found its home in St Mark’s Square, being located in the Napoleonic Wing and part of the Procuratie Nuove (once the royal palace of Emperor Ferdinand I of the Hapsburg dynasty). The Correr Museum offers a wide and fascinating insight into the art and history of Venice with 20 rooms illustrating the life and culture of the Venetian Republic over the centuries of its grandeur and independence. Here visitors can find a stunning art gallery – including masterpieces by Antonello da Messina, the Bellini family, Carpaccio, Vivarini, Cosmè Tura, Flemish and Greek painters – together with collections documenting various aspects of the Venetian history, from daily life to public institutions, naval achievements and local festivities.
