Guided tour of the legendary blacksmithing Officina Zanon
Talented Master Francesco Zanon opens the doors of the historical Officina Zanon to share his lifetime experience, guiding small groups of participants in a tour through nearly eighty years of blacksmithing activity. The workshop, established by his father Gino in the Forties, soon became renowned thanks to the high quality of their work, developed also through prestigious collaborations with celebrated architects and artists. Francesco will illustrate both traditional and innovative techniques, explaining the various aspects and phases of blacksmithing, such as grinding, sharpening, polishing, quenching, forging and engraving.

Metal workingBuilding an iron bridge between past and presentThe Zanon blacksmith workshop is a historical and renowned company, specializing in iron and metal working, boasting nearly eighty years of activity in Venice. Founded by Gino Zanon and then taken over in 1980 by his sons Francesco and Paolo, fully educated by their father in a strong work ethic and culture, it has left an incredible amount of works in the city of Venice and all over the world. The Zanon brothers have worked both as restorers of historical landmarks (such as the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute) and as creative craftsmen, for public and religious institutions, as well as for private clients, actively collaborating with great architects, artists, sculptors. Particularly significant was their lifetime partnership with architect Carlo Scarpa (1954-78): some of the most fascinating and prestigious projects they’ve accomplished together in Venice are the Aula Magna of Ca’ Foscari University (1954/1956), the very famous Olivetti Showroom in St. Mark’s Square (1957/1958), the Querini Stampalia Foundation (1961/1963).
