Become a “perlera” for a day! Make your own Venetian bead

The workshop Become perlera for a day! is held by talented Simona Iacovazzi in her Dorsoduro atelier Perlamadre, where she creates her original Murano glass jewels, in harmony with the Made in Italy philosophy promoting the local design. In one hour and a half, Simona makes the participants live the true experience of Murano glass lampworking. After telling the history of the famous Venetian beads, she teaches some traditional techniques and shows how to work on the esthetic potential of glass, so that every participant learns how to make their own first Venetian bead. The small jewel will then be sent to their home.

Jewellery making

Precious glass jewels born from Venetian traditions blended with contemporary tasteIn her Dorsoduro atelier and shop, Simona Iacovazzi works with fire to handcraft colourful Murano glass beads and precious jewels. Born and raised in Salento, in southern Italy, she worked as a restorer specialising in stone and papier-mâché, when she moved to Venice she met a challenging material: glass. Unstable and fragile, it has a huge potential and, at the same time, strong limits: it was love at first sight. After a lampworking course and a two-year apprenticeship in a Murano furnace, she became a perlera. In 2012, she opened her own business, Perlamadre, where she carries out every step of the creative process, from the design of her unique pieces, in a contemporary taste. Her creations reflect the Made in Italy philosophy with the desire to rediscover the role of craftspeople and of local design. Simona is mainly inspired by Venice and its water – the lagoon, the sealife creatures, rowing – but also, by deep-sea fishing in the south of Italy and by glass itself.
