The photograph depicts the Japanese National Living Treasure Zenzo Fukushima working at his atelier. Fukushima makes Koishiwara ware, which originated in 16th-century Korea, and was introduced to Japan in the 17th century. The master craftsman uses locally sourced iron-rich clay and enhances the traditional Koishiwara material with his innovative glazing techniques.
