Suzushi Hanayagi

Suzushi Hanayagi is a choreographer and dancer born in Osaka in 1928. She is unique in her combined training and performance work, finding her way by embracing more than three Japanese classical dance forms—including the Hanayagi School, a traditional Kabuki style founded in Japan’s nineteenth century, and the Takehara Han and Inoue schools of mai--and experimental performance forms. For over fifty years she actively performed, taught and choreographed in classic and contemporary dance forms in Japan, besides touring as both a classic and contemporary choreographer/dancer in the United States and Europe. In the 1950s, she travelled to New York to study with Martha Graham and in the early 1960s became one of the founding members of Judson Dance Theater where she began to perform her solo pieces. From 1984 and throughout the 1990s, Ms Hanayagi served as a choreographer in over fifteen seminal productions with Robert Wilson. Amongst others, are the productions of Madame Butterfly, Death Destruction and Detroit II, Alceste and the CIVIL wars.
