Cecilia Levy

Formerly a graphic designer and bookbinder, Cecilia Levy now works full-time as an independent artist, creating sculptural objects in paper using old book pages, wheat starch paste and the papier mâché technique. Her work is exhibited internationally and is included in private and permanent collections, including the Swedish National Museum. In 2017 her public art commission was installed in the main entrance of Stockholm’s New Karolinska University Hospital: 20 plinths holding over 25 unique paper sculptures. She lives in Sigtuna, works in her studio in Uppsala and is a member of Konsthantverkarna in Stockholm, where her work is sold.

Cecilia Levy specialises in papier mâché and has mastered a vast range of paper-working techniques. As a former graphic designer and bookbinder, Cecilia is skilled in many techniques used in these two areas, often incorporating aspects of them into her work.

Inspiration for her technique and designs first came to Cecilia Levy when she was booked for a solo show at an arts and crafts gallery in 2010. She was then working with bookbinding and graphic design. “The idea to exhibit hand-bound books did not appeal to me.” Therefore, she started experimenting, shredding an old book she had previously bought from a charity shop, using small pieces of book pages and papier mâché technique to build bowl shapes. She felt an immediate affinity with this form of working. “Also, the solo show was a success and my work received a lot of positive attention. So, it sort of chose me.”
