Blue Arrows

The large, full-bodied vessel is hand coiled, and then raku-fired in order to achieve fusion between the pattern and the spherical form. The clay pot is decorated with a blue geometric pattern that repeats, expands and contracts, communicating rhythm and movement.

A combination of hand coiling methods is used to achieve the desired raku pot shape. Once the vessel is biscuit-fired, it is decorated by applying a grid and pattern to the surface, which is then painted using underglaze colours to achieve the blue pattern. Fired to 1000 ºC, the pot is lifted from the kiln with metal tongs, placed in a metal bin with sawdust, and quickly sealed. As the sawdust ignites, the sealed top starves the fire of oxygen, enabling the carbon to react with the clay body, colouring it with different shades of grey to black.
