Yu Mei Huang is a Taiwanese-born, London-based textile artist focused on innovative knit design and practice. She operates across disciplines, interweaving different materials and crafts to examine tactility, the collective experience of space, cultural mobility, and displacement. Yu Mei's work plays with information, the fabric of time, and our collective memory. Her pieces come alive and apart when we interact with and move around the material. From knitted garments and bags to cutting-edge fibre art and large-scale installations, experimentation is the lifeblood of her creative expression.

Real Magic

Real Magic is a textile composition featuring knitted pleats crafted from high-quality polyester yarn. The material is characterised by its striking red and black shades, which are expertly printed onto one side of the pleats. This unique textile is capable of shape-shifting with the wearer’s body movement, resulting in the creation of a captivating soft sculptural form.

On the Sea

On the Sea is a series of two large wall-hanging rugs featuring intricate patterns depicting the graphic shapes of islands. These pieces are meticulously hand-tufted using a combination of cotton and linen yarns and are made to showcase a soil colour palette.

Dust of Time_Floral

Dust of Time is a soft sculpture composed of premium polyester material and knitted pleats. The artwork features a captivating photo taken by Yu Mei Huang, printed onto one side of the pleats. The image showcases natural shapes and flora in a sophisticated monochrome colour scheme.

Dust of Time _Summer

The Summer knitted piece from the Dust of Time series is an exquisite soft sculpture, crafted from polyester yarn. This unique sculpture showcases a captivating photograph, personally taken by Yu Mei Huang, which is printed onto one side of the pleats. The printed image captures a vision of summer and is rendered in a monochrome colour scheme.

CAST

CAST is a soft sculpture that is crafted using upcycled bubble wrap and elastic yarn. Through the use of the inlay knitting technique, the bubble wrap is transformed into a distinctive texture that gives rise to a voluminous form in this artwork.
