A Sardinian weaving legacy

  • • Mariantonia began her craft in earnest aged 14
  • • Her first creation was a handwoven blanket
  • • Every carpet she creates tells a story

It’s a family affair at M/U with the matriarch, founder, and master weaver, Mariantonia Urru at the helm of the company she started in 1981. She learned the craft of carpet-making as a child, and today Mariantonia works alongside her four children and eight grandchildren, confident that their legacy as master weavers will continue, at least for another generation. M/U’s unique rug designs take their inspiration from archaeology to the festive surroundings of ancient Sardinia. Their delicate handiwork combines tradition and modern technologies to transform these sensations into pieces of art that tell the stories of this fascinating region.

Arenaria

This woven wall piece is part of a study on Sardinian landscapes and stones designed by Paulina Herrera and handwoven by Mariantonia Urru. The research carried out by Paulina Herrera Letelier is focused on bringing a part of the island's wilderness into domestic environments and in this case through contact with the body. Thanks to the combination of yarns and the innovative use of traditional weaving techniques, manual pibiones and litzos, the Arenaria carpet recalls the characteristics of the same stone.

Giardino Fiorito

The idea for this carpet was born from the evolution of the typical design to Samugheo textile tradition called Blooming Bird. In collaboration with designer Caterina Quartana, master weaver Mariantonia Urru revisits this traditional design with a modern version. To bring the idea to life, the design of a traditional saddlebag was combined with the carpet. This duality evokes that of Sardinian culture, where work and home “were the main aims of every man and woman building their own future and their family.”

Licheni

This carpet is part of the Pietra collection designed by Paulina Herrera, inspired by the large granite massifs that emerge on the Sardinian coasts protecting them from waves and wind. To create this collection, in addition to wool, other yarns such as silk and linen have been used to recreate the characteristic texture of these stones, eroded by salt and sculpted by the wind, rough and almost sharp, but also soft thanks to the lichens that grow on the surface.

Ormeggio

The design of this carpet, handwoven by Mariantonia Urru, combines two lines of research carried out by the designer Paulina Herrera: the landscapes of Sardinia and the dynamic perception of spaces. The image represents a map of the movement of boats in a port in the north of the island, over a day. The concept of dynamics led to the innovative composition of the yarns to reflect the movement of water in the perimeter of the carpet.

Patchwork Carpet

This carpet, part of Mariantonia Urru’s Heritage collection, is an ongoing research project into classic designs and patterns of Sardinian weaving history, undertaken in collaboration with Pretziada Studio. Adapting these designs to today's production capabilities and colour schemes, the collection reintroduces traditional, historical pieces and tells their stories. Patchwork is based on the irregularities found in the rich designs of traditional festive bed covers. It is made with a particularly laborious and precise mini-pibiones technique.
