Born from the Earth

  • • Tonino creates sculptures inspired by archetypes
  • • Vases epitomise versatility in his eyes
  • • He loves to share his knowledge with young people

Born and to this day living in Lodi, a town with a long tradition in ceramics, Tonino Negri creates ceramic sculptures that evoke the origins of life on Earth. His craftworks, especially his vases, are a mystical presence in every space they occupy – a room, a garden, a stage, a library – hinting at ancient, deep values of archetypes, where light and darkness, life, death and rebirth coexist. Tonino has travelled around the world, and attended many ateliers where great masters shared their secrets with him. Thanks to them, he developed his own approach to ceramics, including materials and processes. Inspired by those who taught him, he has continued to learn and to share his knowledge with others. Many students have attended his courses, and for ten years he ran a community workspace to help rehabilitate young people battling with addiction.

Ark/Egg

The artwork has an ovoidal shape that stretches upwards, culminating in an architecture evoking a temple, which erupts from the supporting structure. It is made of grès, using the coiling technique, and fired at high temperature (1,200°C). Glazes, made with a personal recipe, give the artwork a silky white-gray effect flecked with brown and black oxide.

Blossoming Garden

The lower part of the artwork evokes a cup on which a flowery cage rests. Ochre in colour, it is made of unglazed grès, using the coiling technique. The cage structure is made with five horizontal rings upheld by columns alternating with buds and flowers, culminating with a dome that supports a floral element. Glazes, created with a personal recipe, give a cream-coloured silky effect to the top part of the artwork.

Sky

On a square, oak wood base, a brass tube supports a spherical vase made of terracotta, with thousands of small holes and embedded glass spheres. The upper part of the vase has a convex copper lid with a small terracotta bird as a knob. When it is dark, a bulb inside the vase makes light shine through the holes, creating the effect of a starry sky.

Pufferfish

This artwork is made of six elements around a metal bar that is fixed on a square oak wood base, blackened by smoke. Three fish and three spheres alternate in decreasing size from the bottom to the top. All the elements are made of grès; glazes, created with personal recipe, confer special colours and silky effects.
