The art of folding

  • • Pietro is interested in all that a fold can express
  • • His textile art also extends to paper and ceramics
  • • He comes from a family of seamstresses

There is no mistaking the passion behind Pietro Seminelli’s work as he talks of his background, inspiration, and journey to becoming a master artisan: literature, personal experiences, sculpture and art, and creative exploration. A fascinating narrative which culminates in his intrigue for folds: the closing and opening, the volume and its possibilities, the interplay between the hidden and revealed aspects. Seminelli’s pleat and fold-based textile designs are more than a technical accomplishment, they are the result of his philosophy, his love for the Baroque, and a continuing investigation of his art, his craft, and its relationship to the world and the designers and brands he works with.

Devoir

This embossed, gilt linen sculptural tunic was meticulously folded by hand into square scales and finished with patinated details. It required a lot of determination as Pietro Seminelli was faced by the roughness of this thick, embossed material. The sculpture is finished with black epaulettes, black horsehair trimmings, bearings in black lacquered ash and brass pegs.

Autorité

This large black dress has been pleated by hand with domino shaped folds. Pietro Seminelli drew his inspiration from the fables and myths of the giants of the l’Or de Rhin for the creation of this dress. The dress is made from folded black linen canvas, lacquered and folded miao fabrics and finished with black horsehair, as well as black lacquered oak and brass pegs.

De Profundis

This fabric sculpture, hand folded from painted and graphite stained linen, was folded in the form of a weathered shield. The fabric sculpture is an open letter of anger in tribute to Oscar Wilde conveying through the image of the shield the notion of armoured doors of secrecy.

Panneaux coulissants

Two sliding panels with hexagonal foldings in parachute fabric. The different level of folded fabrics creates a play of light and shadows, as certain parts of the fabric filter light at different intensities depending on the layers of folds creating a subtle game of transparency.
