Already as a child, Yann Marot enjoyed the experience and atmosphere of his father’s workshop on the family farm. He was drawn to craftsmanship, but initially studied engineering. Degree in hand, he lasted about two weeks in that profession before setting off on a path towards his true passion: becoming a woodturning artisan. “The profession very nearly disappeared but has been redeveloping since the 1980s and 90s. Now there is a symbiosis between artistic turning and traditional woodturning for furniture,” he says. When asked if it’s necessary to learn both techniques, Yann, who is also a devoted teacher, says, “it’s better to have more than one arrow in your quiver”.

This bowl was turned on the lathe while the wood was still wet. Its final form only came a few days after the shaping when the oak dried completely and distorted naturally. It has been finished with a wire brush to create the rope texture. The thinness of the final form – 5 mm – presented a strong technical challenge.

The wood used for this vase came from a 300-year-old oak that had to be felled due to its age. Yann turned it on the lathe, carefully maintaining the most fragile parts – the cracks and its particularities – during the extensive process.

This bowl was turned on the lathe while the wood was still wet. Its final form only came a few days after the shaping when the fig wood dried completely and distorted naturally. Fig trees tend to be twisted and curved due to the high level of stress within the wood, which produces checking, splitting and curvature when worked, making it particularly unpredictable.
