Artfully headstrong

  • • Nikole was awarded the Comité Colbert & UNESCO prize for creativity and craftsmanship
  • • Her work is deeply inspired by theatre
  • • She creates her own fabrics and all her pieces are entirely crafted by hand

“Hands have a precious spiritual life. They have their own eyes and soul. They are determined, virtuous and refined. They have an innate taste for beauty and the power to transform the ordinary into the sublime.” This is Nikole Tursi’s credo. A master milliner from Argentina, she used to work as a costume designer at the Teatro Colón Opera House. Nikole moved to London in 2019. Fascinated by various tools and crafts, she began her creative journey as a self-taught maker. Her grandmother introduced her to fashion and Cesar Orlando Nuñez, a master craftsman, taught her that “bringing to life what she imagined” was possible. Captivated by how boundaries disappear when it comes to shapes, material or volume, Nikole manipulates and prepares the majority of material she uses, employing techniques and tools from various fields.

On Fire

The On Fire piece unveils a stunning display of oversized, vibrant textile flowers that envelop the entire head area. Using a variety of flower-making tools, remarkable 3D volumes are achieved, ensuring a visually striking result. Finely crafted, the use of millinery wire allows for a freeform style, with some of the branches gracefully extending beyond the headpiece.

Filigranas

The Filigranas headpiece is part of a collaboration with the artists at Cabinet Oseo for their REINOS collection. Featuring silver as the main character, this headpiece is inspired by the magnified microscopic view of a living organism. Originally created with alpaca, copper and bronze wires, the headpiece was recreated using a combination of textiles such as tulle, net, mesh and millinery wire.

Howl

The versatile Howl headpiece can be worn as a hat or a wig. Its base is made of panamina, which provides a stable base for the feather-like texture. The intricate design is achieved by meticulously moulding and sealing textile leaves, one at a time, using floral tools. Carefully selected fabrics, ranging from translucent to opaque, contribute to a captivating interplay of textures. Each leaf has a deep black hue, giving the headpiece a sense of mystery and allure.
