Less is more

  • • Nicola works exclusively with solid wood
  • • His first pieces were built for his own house
  • • He trained himself by reading books and online forums

Nicola Tessari was a late bloomer. He decided to become an artisan at the age of 47, after a degree in electronic engineering and a 15-year-long career in different companies in the Vicenza area. Why so late? “Maybe it was a belated vocation, maybe a reaction towards the industrial environment or the sudden discovery of a latent creativity,” he explains. Mainly he saw an unmissable opportunity to turn a passion into a job and he grabbed it with both hands. Since 2013, he works exclusively with solid wood sourced locally, near to his workshop. He specialises in furnishing elements, lamps and artistic objects, all inspired “by purity and essential designs. Redundancy is not something you would want to pair with wood, which is already too rich in details of its own,” as he puts it.

Sir Biss

This piece of furniture was part of a commission created from a batch of walnut and ash wood cut by the same customer. The client needed something to put next to their rocking chair, to hold magazines, place a vase or a plate, and leave a glass of wine while reading. This piece is the result of their request.

Il messaggio è la bottiglia

Il Messaggio è la Bottiglia is part of Nicola Tessari bugNature collection of hand turned vessels. The pieces from the collection are inspired by the aesthetic of Italian masonry techniques, and aim to find a manner of working the surface without altering the physical properties of the walnut wood. The search for a balance and dialogue between material singularities and creative expression are at the centre of Nicola’s work.

Double edge

This wood vase, hand turned from mulberry wood on a lathe, is part of Nicola Tessari’s bugNature collection. The pieces from the collection are inspired by the aesthetic of Italian masonry techniques, and aim to find a manner of working the surface without altering the physical properties of the wood but rather by accentuating them. The search for a balance and dialogue between material singularities and creative expression are at the centre of Nicola’s work.

Groove bowl

Groove, part of Nicola Tessari’s bugNature collection, introduces the notion of movement into the static appearance of the hand turned vessel. The name of the bowl comes both from its meaning, groove, slot, flute, as well as a musical term in the African American music indicating the power of making the listeners dance, introducing the idea of movement. The design for the piece comes from a communion between craftsman and the natural grain of the walnut wood, that Nicola follows, intensifying the dialogue between hand and natural material.
