An advocate for traditional woodwork

  • • Mathias is a designer, woodturner and wood sculptor
  • • He enjoys teaching his craft to others
  • • Traditional techniques are essential to him

With a mixed background of studying design, woodturning and wood sculpting, Mathias Lecocq knows his way around creating. Although he masters the most up-to-date technology, the craftsman is affirmative: nothing compares to traditional techniques of woodturning and sculpting. Working first as a freelance designer, Mathias would buy new tools every time he carried out a project. He opened up a shop to present his work and then found his workshop. He gives courses to all sorts of students, from beginners to connoisseurs. Passionate about his craft, for Mathias teaching is a way of sharing with others. He remembers that the very first wooden object he ever created was a toy truck when he was only 6 or 7 years old.

Guillaume Tell

This sculpture representing Swiss-figure Guillaume Tell and his son is made exclusively by hand with hundreds of different gouges so as to follow the grain of the wood, guaranteeing a unique finish without any sanding. Worked up chip by chip, in an increasingly fine and precise manner, the sculpture took shape after three months of work.

Swiss Skiers

Entirely hand-carved from a beautiful walnut board, without the help of machines, these two wooden paintings depict skiers on the slopes.

Hanging box

Made from a single birch branch, this custom box was crafted entirely on a wood turning machine. The box itself is ‘’trapped’' in a curved piece of wood, which gives it a sense of hanging in the air.

Hand

This is a sculpture of Mathias' hand, entirely carved in the traditional way. The ball of Canton is a ball turned on a wood lathe, containing six balls within it, locked one inside the other. The whole ball is made from a single piece of wood without any gluing.

Rocket lamp

This rocket lamp is entirely made by woodturning, combining several precision techniques. It was made with only walnut and maple wood which are two types of wood that contrast greatly when put together.
