A zither enthusiast

  • • Lászlo first picked up a zither aged eight
  • • He works on innovative techniques to keep the zither relevant
  • • More than 300 zithers compose his current collection

Master zither player and maker Szakál László has dedicated his life to celebrating the traditional folk instrument, which is an integral part and expression of Hungarian peasant culture. From the tender age of eight, László was enchanted with the simple string instrument, capable of reducing audiences to tears. Hailing from four generations of peasant-farmers, the sound struck a chord in the musician’s heart, and ever since then he has been playing the instrument across the world. He was a member of the zither orchestra between 1975 to 1979, a winner of the Hungarian Handicraft Excellent award in 2006 and his zithers are A-rated multiple times, he continues a regional legacy while continuing to evolve the art of zither making.
